Project Overview
Big, bold, & fun kinetic typography.
I was approached by Prysm Studios, a creative motion design studio based in Chicago, to help with design and animation for a new ad spot by Northshore Bank. I brought on my talented and creative motion design friend Kyle Harter to help out with this project.
At first, we were handed a script and were given creative license to decide which words or phrases we wanted to emphasize with the aid of the creative direction from Prysm. From that, we created storyboard designs and an animatic timed to a scratch voiceover. As work progressed through the weeks, iterations of the designs always referenced the look and feel of the approved storyboards from the beginning of the project.
Kyle and I then split animation and design revision duties depending on the needs of each working day. In order to keep animation as tight and cohesive as possible between the two of us, we had a big-picture understanding of how we would animate from our early meetings. We decided to lean on basic animation principles like follow-through and anticipation. It also didn't hurt that we used to be coworkers and already had a very good understanding of the way we like to approach animation which made our workflow fluid. Transitions played a big role in cohesiveness where we leaned on either subtle eye tracing or match cuts to get us to the next scene.
We had a list of deliverables for this video which included a 30 second version as well as a15 second cutdown. Of those, we needed 16x9, 9x16, and 1x1 versions each for the client. I can't state how much fun it was to team up and work with my friend Kyle on this one and to have the faith and leadership of Prysm to knock these deliverables out of the park.
