Project Overview
The aim of this project was to create an animated customer story for OneBlade, a high-end razor company, that partners with Shogun Frontend.
Direction - Greg Beldam & Jennifer Pepper
Animation - Kenneth Hendren
Design - Jinah Kim
VO - David Rhodes
Script - Jennifer Pepper & Kat Ambrose
Goals:
1. Show Shogun Frontend's capabilities such as implementing 3D videos on the web
2. Share game-changing statistics with the audience
3. Get potential clients interested to learn more at getshogun.com
Rough Draft
We had the script and designs finalized but we didn't have VO talent or song selected at the point of starting the rough draft. So I went in to record a scratch VO and found a song in roughly the bpm we were looking for on premium beat. The rough draft doesn't have to have all the bells and whistles, but, showing the timing and animation moves to stakeholders at this point in the process was crucial.
Challenges
We wanted the arrow to have the depth to be able to bank and spin as it made turns along its path. I tried faking it with shape layers in 3D space but it looked super clunky and would've been too time-consuming.
The solution was to use the expression index-1 in z space, then duplicate the layer 20 times, and connect all those layers to a null. Boom 2.5D arrow!
Another challenge we faced early on was all of the transitions from flat to isometric. Originally we tried to take shape layers and change their orientation in 3D space individually. But that caused weird perspectives where one side would appear longer than the other.
The solution was to create a camera and connect that to a null. Then animate the orientation of the null from 0° to 45°, 35°, 30°
